Inmate Money

Each state prison has a Commissary which was started to provide inmates a bank-like account for inmate monies and for buying things not issued by the correctional facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources may send funds to these Commissary accounts by sending it by the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends are able to send prisoners money by way of postal mail and have to send funds to the following address and do so in accordance with the rules written below:

The money has to be in a money order made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be kept for a 15-day holding period, and during this period the prisoner will not have access to the money. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that do not have appropriate inmate info if the envelope has a valid return address. Checks and cash will not be deposited so do not send cash or checks.
