Inmate Money

Each state correctional institution has a Commissary that was started to provide prisoners an account for prisoner money and for buying things not issued by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone may add funds to prisoner’s Commissary accounts using the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send prisoners money by way of postal mail and must send funds to this address and do so in accordance with the steps listed below:

The money has to be in the form of a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is best if you use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold, and in this time the prisoner will not have access to the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return money orders that don’t have appropriate inmate info if the envelope has a valid return address. Checks and cash can’t be accepted so do not send any checks or cash.
