Bail & Bail Bondsmen – How To Get Out of Jail

Of course, if you are in jail, your only thought is about when and how you will get out. After you’ve gone through booking, a bail amount is decided by the magistrate. In cases where no bail is set this might mean that you will either be released on your ‘own recognizance’ until your court date, or you don’t get released while you wait for your court date.

If you are released from jail you will have to promise to show up for court, and until that date you will not be permitted to leave town.

Typically, an inmate at Troup County Correctional Institute will earn an early release in exchange for good behavior when they follow the rules and conduct themselves properly while incarcerated.

If you prove to be trustworthy, you might be given work release detail. Either you will have to go back to jail at the end of the day when you’re finished with work, or you could have the chance to move to a halfway house instead of jail.

Bail

Your bail is how much money that you have to pay to the courts to be released from jail until your trial. The amount you will have to pay depends on the seriousness of your charges. You will have to post ten percent of the total that was determined before you can be released from jail. If you don’t show up for your scheduled court date, whoever paid your bail will not get their money back.

Find Out How Much Someone’s Bail Is

You must call the jail. If you have all the person’s info, like name, address and date of birth, they’ll be able to let you know the bail amount. You can also check their bail amount and status on the Troup County Correctional Institute website.

How To Bail Someone Out of Jail

Having to bail a friend or family member out of jail is an unpleasant situation, but in some cases, its really easy if you have the money. First of all, you need to know if it is a “Cash Bond Only”. If it is, you won’t be able to use the services of a Bail Bondsman. Take cash only to the jail – they can’t accept a check. Once you have paid the bond, the person will get released. If the conditions of bail are not violated, you’ll get the bail money back.

Bail Bondsman

If the bail amount is too high, or you just don’t have the money, you should hire a bail bondsman. Bondsmen generally have a fee of 10-15% of the total amount of bail set by the magistrate, and in most cases with a minimum fee of $100. The amount you pay to the bondsman is non-refundable and has to be paid in cash. If their bail has been set particularly high, the bail bondsman might use your assets as collateral for the bond in addition to whatever their charges are.

Jail Policies and Procedures

Intake Procedures / Booking

The jail intake process takes you through each of these steps:

  • You will be placed in a holding cell. If there are a lot of arrests, you will have to wait a while to get processed.
  • The first thing you will have to is you will answer some basic questions, like what is your full legal name, your address, birth date and a contact person.
  • You will also be asked about your medical and psychological history.
  • You will be issued an inmate number.
  • You will be fingerprinted.
  • You will have your mugshot taken.
  • All of your personal property will be taken from you and stored until you get released from jail.
  • They will allow you to use the telephone to call family, friends, or bail bondsman.
  • If they expect that you will make bail and be released quickly, you will be allowed to skip the jumpsuit and keep wearing your own clothes, if not you will be given a jail uniform – the jumpsuit.

Have you been arrested and gone through jail intake? If so, please share your experience. How long did it take to get through intake? Were you treated fairly? Can you share any tips that might help other people make it through jail intake?

Discharge Procedures

When you pay your bail, you will get released from jail. Getting discharged from jail takes from 30 minutes to hours or even all day long. Or, simply, the faster you can pay your bail, the faster you will get discharged from jail. Also, how fast you get released depends on if you have a cash bond amount or if the judge has to determine how much to set your bail at. For a minor offense, you will be booked and released on your own recognizance. When you have served out your jail sentence and have a date of your release, you should plan to be released that morning.

How To Turn Yourself In

out against you, or if you must start a jail sentence, it is recommended that you follow the rules and turn yourself in willingly. In the case of an outstanding warrant, go down to the jail reception area, and tell the intake officer that think that there is a warrant for your arrest. The officer will verify that you have an outstanding arrest warrant, and if they find one, you will be taken into the sheriff’s custody. If it is for a jail sentence, report at the time and date that the sentence order or court paperwork states. Ensure that you get don’t get there late, or they may decide to arrest you. Just bring necessary items when you turn yourself in, for example your driver’s license or ID, any prescription medication you might take, and the official sentencing order.

Visitation Procedures

Inmates must list information about each visitor to the jail. Your visitor’s information will be put into a log of visitors for the requesting inmate. All visitors have to provide proof of identification. Anyone showing up late or that does not have a visitation order will not be able to attend visitation.
Jail visitation policies frequently change, so we suggest that you double-check the official Troup County Correctional Institute jail site before you go to visitation.

Visiting Hours

Phone Calls & Phone Usage Policy

The only phone calls that inmates are allowed to make are made through a jail approved pre-paid phone account or phone card . Jail phone calls are generally pricier than regular phone calls. Inmates are able to make phone calls, with restrictions on how often you can use the phone, but inmates must keep in mind that you are just one of many people who want to talk to their loved ones. Don’t forget you can ask to have a copy of the report before you are sentenced, so you have the opportunity to review it and correct any mistakes.

Sentencing

If you get convicted of a crime during your trial, you will then get sentenced. The presiding judge in your case will weigh several options when determining your sentence, ranging from community service, house arrest, and probation, to prison or jail time. Life In Jail / What Its Like

    Daily Life

Everyone knows that getting locked up in the Troup County jail is quite unpleasant, you will soon get used to the daily routine there. All inmates get an alarm for wake-up at 6:00AM, and then roll call. Next, you will eat breakfast. When you finish breakfast you will be required to work in the program that has been assigned to you. This could be working in the kitchen, laundry, or some sort of manufacturing job. While this may seem tedious, it may help you when you leave jail, as you are gaining experience in a certain field of work. Other inmates go to school, while some take part in mandated treatment programs. After lunch, there will be another roll call, then back to work. Your evening will be spent either in your cell or a common room. During this time dinner is served and you will be expected to take a shower. After another roll call, it’s lights out. Even though you will be confined to your cell, there may be enough light to read or write letters. Then again, most inmates welcome lights out, and try to get as much sleep as they can.

Most people are frightened at the idea of jail because they don’t know what to expect. If you have spent any time in Troup County Correctional Institute, your experiences would be welcomed, if it can help another person to deal with it.

    Dress Code

When incarcerated, all inmates are expected to wear the Troup County Correctional Institute uniform. This is normally a jumpsuit or scrubs. Of note to anyone visiting an inmate – you must be properly dressed. Any clothing considered inappropriate will not be permitted.

How To Send Money to an Inmate

You will have your own ‘bank account’ while in jail. This money is used to purchase items from the Commissary. Family and friends can deposit money into this account for you, and any money you earn while in prison will also be deposited into your account. Outside money can be paid in to your account via a money order, cash or check. If someone sends a check or money order, make sure that they write your inmate ID on it. The maximum amount you are allowed in your account is $290 per month.

The process for sending funds to Troup County Correctional Institute inmates might change, so be sure to double check the official website before send money to someone in jail there.

    Commissary

The commissary is the jail store. You can purchase a number of things here, such as toiletries, snacks and writing supplies. Bear in mind that you will probably want to use the commissary daily, and any infractions will get that privilege taken away from you.

    Inmate Medications

If you are on any type of prescription medication, you will be allowed to continue taking it while in jail. When you are first processed, you will be asked what medication you take. You will then be referred to the jail nurse or doctor who will be in charge of monitoring your health and prescribing your medication.

    Meals

You will get three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. As expected, they are very basic, but healthy. A typical breakfast might be cereal, toast, coffee and fruit. Lunch might be spaghetti, salad, bread and milk. Dinner could be chicken casserole, rice, vegetables, dessert and milk. Contrary to popular belief, prison food has greatly improved over the years, and you might find that it’s not much different from what you would eat at home.

    Pods / The Yard

The jail is designed in a ‘pod’ layout, with self-contained housing arranged around an outdoor yard. Each pod has a central control station and a common room, and the inmates take turns in using the yard. The jail is designed this way to keep certain inmates together, and others away from the general population.

    Gangs

As with life in general, gangs are a part of prison life. Obviously it is best to avoid becoming a part of this environment as it will only lead to trouble. When you first enter prison, you might find yourself being ‘primed’ to join a gang, or worse, you might get their attention in a negative way. The best thing to do is keep your head down and don’t get involved.
