Bail & Bail Bondsmen – How To Get Out of Jail

Of course, if you are incarcerated, your primary thought is about how to get out. After booking, your bail is determined by the magistrate. If no bail is set this might mean that you will either get released, pending trial, or you have to stay in jail until your trial.

If you are released from jail you are required to promise to be in court on your court date, and until that day you are required not to leave the county.

Usually, prisoners at Richland County Jail can earn an early release in exchange for good behavior if they respect the rules and area a good inmate while incarcerated.

If you do exhibit good behavior and the jail believes you can be trusted, you may be allowed to participate in a work release program. You will be required to stay jail every day when you’re finished working, or you could be permitted to sleep in a halfway house instead of the jail.

Bail

Your bail is money that you have to pay to the court system in order to be released from jail until your court date. The amount you will have to pay is determined by what crime you are charged with and how serious it is. You will need to put up 10% of the amount that was determined so you can get discharged from jail. If you don’t go to court, the person that bailed you out of jail will lose that money.

Find Out How Much Someone’s Bail Is

To find out how much bail money you will need to bail someone out of jail need to call the jail or the county courthouse. If you have all the person’s info, such as name, address and date of birth, they will tell you the bail amount. Also, you can check their bail amount and status on the jail website.

How To Bail Someone Out of Jail

Posting bail to get out of jail is an unpleasant situation, but fortunately, it is easy if you have the money. To start with, figure out if they have a Cash Only Bond situation. If this is the case, you will not be able to use the services of a bail bondsman. Take cash only to the jail – the jail can’t accept a personal check. When you’ve paid bail, the inmate will be released to your care. If they don’t violate the terms of their bail, you’ll get your money back.

Bail Bondsman

If the bail amount is too high, or you can’t afford it yourself, you will need to use a bail bondsman. Bail bondsmen usually charge a fee of 10-15% of the total amount of bail set, and usually with a minimum charge of $100. The money you pay to the bail bondsman is non-refundable and has to be paid in cash. If bail is very large, the bail bondsman may ask to use your assets, such as home, property or cars, as collateral for the bond in addition to whatever their charges are.

Jail Policies and Procedures

Intake Procedures / Booking

The jail intake procedure takes you through each of these steps:

  • You will be placed in a waiting area or cell. If there are a lot of arrests, it will take a while to get processed.
  • First, have to answer some simple questions, such as what is your full name, address, birth date and an emergency contact.
  • They’ll also ask you about your mental and medical history.
  • You will be issued an inmate ID.
  • You will be fingerprinted.
  • You will get your mugshot taken.
  • Any property you have will be taken away from you and stored until you get released.
  • You will get to make a telephone call so you can talk to a family member, friend, or bail bondsman.
  • If they expect that you will make bail and be released quickly, you will be allowed to keep wearing your own clothes, otherwise you will be given a jail uniform – the jumpsuit.

Have you ever been booked into jail? If so, please tell your story. How long did it take to get through intake? Were you treated fairly? Can you tell us tips that might help other people that get arrested make it through jail intake?

Discharge Procedures

When you pay your bail, you will get released from jail. Getting discharged will take between 10 minutes to hours or even all day long. So, the quicker you post bail, the sooner you will be released. Also, how fast you get released might depend on whether you’ve got a cash bond or if a magistrate needs to figure out the amount of bail to be set. For a minor charge, you will simply be booked and released on your own recognizance. When you have served your sentence and have a date of your release, expect to be discharged that morning.

How To Turn Yourself In

issued for your arrest, or if you need to report to start a sentence, it is recommended that you do the right thing and turn yourself in willingly. If you have a warrant, report to the jail, and tell an officer that believe that there could be an outstanding warrant for your arrest. They will check to see if you have a warrant, and if they verify that there is a warrant for your arrest, they will take you into custody. If it is for a jail sentence, go down to the jail on the date and time that the sentence order lists. Be very careful that you are not late. Make sure that you only bring approved items when you go to jail, such as your driver’s license or photo ID, any prescription medication you might take, as well as a copy of the sentencing order.

Visitation Procedures

To have visitors, you must give each visitor’s name and date of birth to the jail in advance of the visit. Your visitor’s names will be entered in a log of visitors for the inmate. Each visitor must provide proof of identification. Any visitors arriving late or without a visiting order will not be allowed to attend visitation.
Visitation procedures can change, so you should review the official Richland County Jail jail site before you try to visit an inmate.

Visiting Hours

Phone Calls & Phone Usage Policy

Inmates are able to make phone calls, with restrictions on when you can make phone calls, how long you can talk, and how often you can make calls, but you should keep in mind lots of people want to use the phone – so you have to share. If you break the rules and are disciplined, phone privileges could be reduced or eliminated completely, as part of the punishment.

Life In Jail / What Its Like

    Daily Life

While the prospect of serving a jail sentence in Richland County Jail is very scary, soon you will get accustomed to the daily routine there. You will get a wake-up alarm at about 6am, and then you’ll have roll call. Next, you will have breakfast. Following breakfast you will work in the work program that you’ve been assigned to. This could be working in the kitchen, laundry, or some sort of manufacturing job. While this may seem tedious, it may help you when you leave jail, as you are gaining experience in a certain field of work. Other inmates go to school, while some take part in mandated treatment programs. After lunch, there will be another roll call, then back to work. Your evening will be spent either in your cell or a common room. During this time dinner is served and you will be expected to take a shower. After another roll call, it’s lights out. Even though you will be confined to your cell, there may be enough light to read or write letters. Then again, most inmates welcome lights out, and try to get as much sleep as they can.

Most people are frightened at the idea of jail because they don’t know what to expect. If you have spent any time in Richland County Jail, your experiences would be welcomed, if it can help another person to deal with it.

    Dress Code

When incarcerated, all inmates are expected to wear the Richland County Jail uniform. This is normally a jumpsuit or scrubs. Of note to anyone visiting an inmate – you must be properly dressed. Any clothing considered inappropriate will not be permitted.

How To Send Money to an Inmate

You will have your own ‘bank account’ while in jail. This money is used to purchase items from the Commissary. Family and friends can deposit money into this account for you, and any money you earn while in prison will also be deposited into your account. Outside money can be paid in to your account via a money order, cash or check. If someone sends a check or money order, make sure that they write your inmate ID on it. The maximum amount you are allowed in your account is $290 per month.

The process for sending money to inmates might change, so it would be best to visit the site when you send money to an inmate.

    Commissary

The commissary is the jail store. You can purchase a number of things here, such as toiletries, snacks and writing supplies. Bear in mind that you will probably want to use the commissary daily, and any infractions will get that privilege taken away from you.

    Inmate Medications

If you are on any type of prescription medication, you will be allowed to continue taking it while in jail. When you are first processed, you will be asked what medication you take. You will then be referred to the jail nurse or doctor who will be in charge of monitoring your health and prescribing your medication.

    Meals

You will get three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. As expected, they are very basic, but healthy. A typical breakfast might be cereal, toast, coffee and fruit. Lunch might be spaghetti, salad, bread and milk. Dinner could be chicken casserole, rice, vegetables, dessert and milk. Contrary to popular belief, prison food has greatly improved over the years, and you might find that it’s not much different from what you would eat at home.

    Pods / The Yard

The jail is designed in a ‘pod’ layout, with self-contained housing arranged around an outdoor yard. Each pod has a central control station and a common room, and the inmates take turns in using the yard. The jail is designed this way to keep certain inmates together, and others away from the general population.

    Gangs

As with life in general, gangs are a part of prison life. Obviously it is best to avoid becoming a part of this environment as it will only lead to trouble. When you first enter prison, you might find yourself being ‘primed’ to join a gang, or worse, you might get their attention in a negative way. The best thing to do is keep your head down and don’t get involved.
