Bail & Bail Bondsmen – How To Get Out of Jail

Once you’re arrested and put in jail, your primary thought is about when you get out. After you’ve been booked, your bail is determined either through a preset bail schedule or a magistrate. If no bail is set this may mean that you will either be released, or you must remain in jail until your trial.

If you do bail out of jail you are required to agree to go to your court date, and in the meantime you are not permitted to travel out of the county.

Usually, inmates in the Adams County Jail can earn early release in exchange for good behavior when they don’t break the rules and act right while incarcerated.

If you prove to be trustworthy, you may be granted work release. Either you will have to stay the jail each day when you’re finished at your job, or you could get to move into a halfway house instead of jail.

Bail

Your bail is how much money that you will be required to pay to be released from jail until you go to court. The amount you will have to pay all depends on what crime you are charged with and how serious it is. You will have to pay 10% of the amount set in order to be released. If you don’t go to your scheduled court date, whoever posted your bail will lose that bail money.

Find Out How Much Someone’s Bail Is

You will need to call the jail. If you have all the person’s information, like name, address and date of birth, they will tell you how much their bail is. You can also find out how much their bail is on the Adams County Jail site.

How To Bail Someone Out of Jail

Having to bail a friend or family member out of jail is no fun, but most of the time, it is simple to do if you have the money. First, figure out if they have a Cash Only Bond situation. If so, you will not be able to get a bondsman. Bail can only be paid by cash – they will not accept a check. As soon as you’ve posted (paid) bond, the prisoner will get released. If the conditions of bail are not violated, you will get this money back.

Bail Bondsman

If the bail amount is too high, or you just can’t afford to pay it, you will need to use a bail bondsman. Bail bondsmen usually have a fee of 10-15% of the total amount of bail set by the magistrate, and usually with a minimum fee of $100. This money is non-refundable and is typically cash only. If the bail is exceptionally high, the bondsman will in these cases use your assets, such as home, property or cars, as collateral for the bond in addition to whatever their charges are.

Jail Policies and Procedures

Intake Procedures / Booking

The jail intake procedure includes each of these steps:

  • You will get put in a holding cell. If the jail is really busy, it will take a while to get processed.
  • The first step is that you must answer some basic questions, like what is your full name, home address, birth date and an emergency contact.
  • They’ll also ask you about your medical and psychological history.
  • You’ll be given an inmate number.
  • You will get fingerprinted.
  • You will have your mugshot taken.
  • All personal property will get taken away from you and will be stored until you are released.
  • They will let you use the phone so you can get in touch with a family member, friend, or bail bondsman.
  • If you are expected to be released shortly, you will be allowed to wear your street clothes, otherwise you will be given a jail uniform.

Have you ever been arrested and gone through processing at jail? If you have, you should tell us how it happened. How long did it take to get through intake? Were you treated fairly? Can you tell us tips that could help other people that get arrested to get through the process?

Discharge Procedures

When you pay your bail, you will get released from jail. The discharge process can take anywhere between 30 minutes to all day. So, the faster you can post bail, the faster you will be released. It also might depend on whether or not you’ve got a cash bond amount or if a judge needs to decide on the amount of bail to be set. For minor charges, you will be booked and get released without having to post bail. If you have served a sentence in jail and have a release date, you should expect to get released between 9am and noon.

How To Turn Yourself In

If the police have a, or if you must report to start a sentence, you really should follow the law and turn yourself in willingly. In the case of an outstanding warrant, go down to the jail reception area, and tell the intake officer that you think they might have an outstanding warrant for your arrest. The officer will verify that you have an outstanding arrest warrant, and if there is one, you will be taken into jail custody. If you have a jail sentence to serve, go to the jail at the exact time and date that the sentence order states. Be very careful that you are not late. Be sure to only bring required items when you turn yourself in, such as your driver’s license or state issued ID, any prescription medication you might take, along with your doctor’s prescription, as well as the sentencing order from court.

Visitation Procedures

To have visitors, you need to give the name and date of birth of each visitor to the jail before anyone can visit them. Your visitor’s names will go in the visitation log for the requesting inmate. All visitors will be required to provide identification. Visitors arriving late or that does not have a visitation order will not be able to attend visitation.
Visitation procedures can change, so double-check the jail site before you visit an inmate.

Visiting Hours

Phone Calls & Phone Usage Policy

Inmates are able to make phone calls, with restrictions on when and how often you can use the phone, but inmates must keep in mind that there are a limited number of phones, so all the inmates must share phone time. If you are under any sort of disciplinary procedure, phone privileges may be limited or forbidden completely.

Life In Jail / What Its Like

    Daily Life

Just the thought of spending time in the Adams County jail is very scary, in time you will get used to the daily routine there. You will get a wake-up alarm every morning at 6am, and then you’ll have roll call. Then you will get breakfast. When you finish eating breakfast you will work in the work program or other activity that you are assigned. This could be working in the kitchen, laundry, or some sort of manufacturing job. While this may seem tedious, it may help you when you leave jail, as you are gaining experience in a certain field of work. Other inmates go to school, while some take part in mandated treatment programs. After lunch, there will be another roll call, then back to work. Your evening will be spent either in your cell or a common room. During this time dinner is served and you will be expected to take a shower. After another roll call, it’s lights out. Even though you will be confined to your cell, there may be enough light to read or write letters. Then again, most inmates welcome lights out, and try to get as much sleep as they can.

Most people are frightened at the idea of jail because they don’t know what to expect. If you have spent any time in Adams County Jail, your experiences would be welcomed, if it can help another person to deal with it.

    Dress Code

When incarcerated, all inmates are expected to wear the Adams County Jail uniform. This is normally a jumpsuit or scrubs. Of note to anyone visiting an inmate – you must be properly dressed. Any clothing considered inappropriate will not be permitted.

How To Send Money to an Inmate

You will have your own ‘bank account’ while in jail. This money is used to purchase items from the Commissary. Family and friends can deposit money into this account for you, and any money you earn while in prison will also be deposited into your account. Outside money can be paid in to your account via a money order, cash or check. If someone sends a check or money order, make sure that they write your inmate ID on it. The maximum amount you are allowed in your account is $290 per month.

The process for sending money to someone in jail at Adams County Jail is always changing, so be sure to check the official website when you send any funds.

    Commissary

The commissary is the jail store. You can purchase a number of things here, such as toiletries, snacks and writing supplies. Bear in mind that you will probably want to use the commissary daily, and any infractions will get that privilege taken away from you.

    Inmate Medications

If you are on any type of prescription medication, you will be allowed to continue taking it while in jail. When you are first processed, you will be asked what medication you take. You will then be referred to the jail nurse or doctor who will be in charge of monitoring your health and prescribing your medication.

    Meals

You will get three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. As expected, they are very basic, but healthy. A typical breakfast might be cereal, toast, coffee and fruit. Lunch might be spaghetti, salad, bread and milk. Dinner could be chicken casserole, rice, vegetables, dessert and milk. Contrary to popular belief, prison food has greatly improved over the years, and you might find that it’s not much different from what you would eat at home.

    Pods / The Yard

The jail is designed in a ‘pod’ layout, with self-contained housing arranged around an outdoor yard. Each pod has a central control station and a common room, and the inmates take turns in using the yard. The jail is designed this way to keep certain inmates together, and others away from the general population.

    Gangs

As with life in general, gangs are a part of prison life. Obviously it is best to avoid becoming a part of this environment as it will only lead to trouble. When you first enter prison, you might find yourself being ‘primed’ to join a gang, or worse, you might get their attention in a negative way. The best thing to do is keep your head down and don’t get involved.
