Inmate Money

Every prison has a Commissary which was started to provide prisoners an account for prisoner funds and for buying things not issued to inmates by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources can add funds to prisoner’s Commissary accounts with Western Union and the U.S. Postal Service.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can choose to send inmates funds by way of postal mail and will have to send funds to the following address and do so in accordance with the policies given below:

The money must be a money order made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is best if you use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day hold, during which the prisoner will not get the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will send back any funds that don’t have appropriate inmate information provided the envelope it was sent it has an adequate return address. Personal checks and cash can’t be deposited to the prisoner’s account so don’t send any cash or checks.
