Inmate Money

Each state prison has a Commissary that serves to provide a bank-like account for inmate funds and for purchasing things not issued by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can send funds to these accounts using the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send inmates funds by way of the postal service and must send the money to the following address and follow the policies given below:

The deposit must be in a money order made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is advisable to use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be placed on a 15-day hold period, and during this hold period the inmate will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return any funds that don’t have appropriate inmate information if the envelope it was sent it has a return address. Cash and personal checks won’t be accepted for deposit so do not send checks or cash.
