Inmate Money

Every state correctional institution has a Commissary that was started to provide inmates a bank-like account for prisoner funds and for purchasing things not issued by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can add funds into these Commissary accounts using the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends are able to send inmates funds by way of postal mail and have to send those funds to the address below and follow the policies listed below:

The funds have to be in a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is advisable to use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day holding period, during which the prisoner will not get the money. The Bureau of Prisons will send back money orders that do not have correct inmate information but only if the envelope it was sent it has an adequate return address. Cash and personal checks will not be deposited so don’t send any checks or cash.
