Inmate Money

Each state correctional institution has a Commissary that serves to provide a bank-like account for inmate funds and for buying things not issued to inmates by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources can send money into these Commissary accounts by sending it by the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends are able to send inmates funds in the postal service and will have to send money to the following address and follow the policies written below:

The funds must be a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be kept for a 15-day hold, and during this hold period the inmate will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return funds that don’t have appropriate prisoner info provided the envelope it was sent it has an adequate return address. Checks and cash will not be deposited to the prisoner’s account so don’t send checks or cash.
