Inmate Money

Each state prison has a Commissary which serves to provide a bank-like account for inmate funds and for buying items not issued to inmates by the prison.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources may deposit funds to inmate’s Commissary accounts using Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send prisoners funds by way of postal mail and must send it to this address and do so in accordance with the policies shows below:

The funds must be in the form of a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be placed on a 15-day hold, and in this time the prisoner will not have access to the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will send back any funds that don’t have valid inmate info but only if the envelope you sent it in has an adequate return address. Checks and cash cannot be deposited to the inmate’s account so don’t send checks or cash.
