Inmate Money

Every prison has a Commissary which serves to provide prisoners an account for prisoner money and for buying things not issued to inmates by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone can deposit funds to prisoner’s Commissary accounts by sending it by Western Union and the U.S. Postal Service.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends are able to send inmates funds in the postal service and will have to send the money to this address and follow the rules shows below:

The funds have to be a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is best if you use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold period, in which the prisoner will not have access to the money. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that do not have valid prisoner info provided the envelope you sent it in has an adequate return address. Cash and personal checks won’t be deposited to the inmate’s account so do not send cash or checks.
