Every state prison has a Commissary which serves to provide inmates a bank-like account for prisoner funds and for buying items not provided by the prison.

Friends, family, or other people can add funds to inmate’s Commissary accounts using Western Union and the U.S. Postal Service.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends are able to send inmates money by way of postal mail and will have to send funds to the address below and follow the directions written below:

The funds must be in the form of a money order made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day holding period, and during this hold period the prisoner will not get the money. The Bureau of Prisons will send back any funds that don’t have appropriate inmate info but only if the envelope you sent it in has a return address. Personal checks and cash cannot be accepted for deposit so do not send any cash or checks.
