Inmate Money

Every state prison has a Commissary which serves to provide inmates a bank account for inmate funds and for buying items not issued regularly by the correctional facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone can add funds to prisoner’s Commissary accounts using the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send inmates funds by way of the postal service and must send the money to this address and do so in accordance with the steps listed below:

The deposit must be in the form of a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is best if you use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold period, and during this period the inmate will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will send back any funds that do not have valid inmate information provided the envelope you sent it in has a return address. Cash and personal checks won’t be deposited to the prisoner’s account so don’t send checks or cash.
