Inmate Money

Each state correctional institution has a Commissary which was created to provide prisoners a bank type account for inmate funds and for buying items not issued regularly by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can send funds to prisoner’s accounts using Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send inmates money by way of the mail and have to send funds to the following address and follow the policies listed below:

The funds have to be in the form of a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is best if you use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be kept for a 15-day holding period, and during this hold period the prisoner will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will send back money orders that do not have appropriate prisoner information provided the envelope has an adequate return address. Cash and checks can’t be deposited to the prisoner’s account so do not send any checks or cash.
