Inmate Money

Each prison has a Commissary that serves to provide inmates an account for inmate monies and for buying items not issued regularly by the facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people may send funds to these accounts using the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send prisoners money by way of the mail and have to send those funds to the following address and do so in accordance with the directions written below:

The money must be in a money order made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold period, in which the prisoner will not get the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender funds that don’t have appropriate inmate info but only if the envelope you sent it in has an adequate return address. Personal checks and cash won’t be accepted for deposit so do not send any checks or cash.
