Inmate Money

Every state correctional institution has a Commissary that was created to provide prisoners a bank-like account for prisoner money and for buying things not issued to inmates by the correctional facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources may deposit money to prisoner’s accounts by sending it by Western Union and the U.S. Postal Service.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send inmates funds in the postal service and have to send money to the following address and do so in accordance with the directions written below:

The deposit must be in the form of a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is best if you use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day hold, during which the prisoner will not have access to the money. The Bureau of Prisons will send back money orders that don’t have valid prisoner information provided the envelope has a return address. Cash and personal checks can’t be deposited to the prisoner’s account so do not send checks or cash.
