Every prison has a Commissary which was started to provide an account for inmate funds and for buying things not provided by the correctional facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone may deposit money to inmate’s accounts by sending it by Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can choose to send inmates funds through the postal service and have to send it to this address and do so in accordance with the directions listed below:

The money has to be in the form of a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be kept for a 15-day hold, and during this period the inmate will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return any funds that do not have correct inmate info if the envelope you sent it in has a return address. Checks and cash won’t be deposited to the prisoner’s account so don’t send checks or cash.

Inmate Programs

ICIW provides educational and vocational services to offenders including Adult Basic Education, special education for eligible individuals, G. E. D., and high school diploma certification. Internal work assignments and vocational training courses provide vocational training opportunities. An Iowa Prison Industries also provides on-site vocational training. The institution emphasizes responsibility and accountability in preparing women offenders for successful Re-Entry to the community. Programs offered focus on interpersonal relationships, domestic violence, career assessment and exploration, self-esteem, parenting, independent living, decision-making skills , victim impact, thinking patterns, and health education. A substance abuse prevention, assessment, and referral program is licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health. The facility also houses an in-patient substance abuse treatment program.

Victim Notification

The Department of Justice Victim Notification System (VNS) is a system that provides victims with information pertaining to their case and/or any defendants in the case. You will receive a Victim Identification Number (VIN) and a Personal Identification Number (PIN) that will allow you to access VNS via the internet or by phone. Here, you will find information about future court hearings, historical court events, and detailed information about the defendant. This will include criminal charges filed, the outcome of charges, sentence imposed, custody location, projected release date and any other release information. The VNS website is updated daily. You will also receive any ongoing information by mail or email.
