It is best if you use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day holding period, during which the inmate will not have access to the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will send back money orders that don’t have appropriate prisoner information provided the envelope has a return address. Personal checks and cash won’t be deposited to the prisoner’s account so don’t send checks or cash.
