Inmate Money

Each prison has a Commissary which was created to provide prisoners a bank account for prisoner funds and for buying items not issued by the prison.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources can add money into these accounts by sending it by Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send prisoners funds by way of postal mail and have to send those funds to the address below and do so in accordance with the policies provided below:

The money has to be in a money order made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day holding period, during which the prisoner will not have access to the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will send back funds that do not have appropriate inmate info provided the envelope you sent it in has a valid return address. Personal checks and cash cannot be deposited so do not send any checks or cash.
