Inmate Money

Each state correctional institution has a Commissary which serves to provide prisoners a bank-like account for prisoner money and for buying things not issued to inmates by the prison.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources can send money into these accounts by sending it by the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send inmates funds by way of postal mail and must send the money to the following address and follow the policies provided below:

The funds have to be a money order made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is best if you use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold, in which the prisoner will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that don’t have valid prisoner info provided the envelope it was sent it has an adequate return address. Personal checks and cash cannot be deposited to the prisoner’s account so don’t send any cash or checks.
