Inmate Money

Each state prison has a Commissary which serves to provide prisoners a bank account for inmate monies and for purchasing things not issued to inmates by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can deposit money into these Commissary accounts with the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send inmates funds in the mail and will have to send money to the following address and do so in accordance with the directions listed below:

The funds must be a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day hold, in which the prisoner will not get the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return any funds that do not have valid inmate info provided the envelope has an adequate return address. Cash and personal checks can’t be accepted for deposit so do not send checks or cash.
