Inmate Money

Every state correctional institution has a Commissary which was started to provide an account for inmate funds and for buying items not issued to inmates by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources can deposit funds to these Commissary accounts by sending it by the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can to send prisoners funds through postal mail and must send the money to the following address and follow the steps shows below:

The money has to be a money order made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is best if you use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold period, and in this time the prisoner will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will send back funds that do not have appropriate inmate information provided the envelope you sent it in has a return address. Cash and personal checks cannot be deposited to the inmate’s account so don’t send any cash or checks.
