Inmate Money

Each state correctional institution has a Commissary that was created to provide inmates a bank type account for prisoner money and for buying items not issued regularly by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone may add funds to prisoner’s Commissary accounts by sending it by the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends are able to send prisoners money through postal mail and have to send money to the address below and do so in accordance with the directions written below:

The money has to be in the form of a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is best if you use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day hold, during which the prisoner will not have access to the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return any funds that do not have valid inmate info if the envelope you sent it in has a return address. Cash and personal checks can’t be deposited to the inmate’s account so do not send checks or cash.
