It is advisable to use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold period, and in this time the prisoner will not have access to the money. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that do not have appropriate prisoner information if the envelope has an adequate return address. Personal checks and cash can’t be accepted so don’t send checks or cash.
