Inmate Money

Each state prison has a Commissary which serves to provide inmates a bank type account for inmate monies and for buying items not issued to inmates by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can send funds into these Commissary accounts by sending it by Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can choose to send prisoners funds by way of postal mail and have to send the money to the address below and follow the directions given below:

The funds have to be in a money order made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day hold, during which the prisoner will not get the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will send back funds that don’t have valid inmate information if the envelope has an adequate return address. Cash and checks cannot be deposited to the prisoner’s account so don’t send cash or checks.
