Inmate Money

Every state prison has a Commissary that was started to provide inmates an account for prisoner funds and for purchasing things not issued regularly by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can deposit funds into these accounts using the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can choose to send prisoners funds through the mail and will have to send those funds to the following address and follow the policies given below:

The funds have to be a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is advisable to use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be placed on a 15-day holding period, in which the inmate will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that don’t have appropriate inmate information if the envelope has a return address. Checks and cash cannot be deposited to the inmate’s account so don’t send any cash or checks.
