Inmate Money

Every state prison has a Commissary that serves to provide prisoners an account for inmate funds and for buying things not issued regularly by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone can add money to inmate’s accounts with Western Union and the U.S. Postal Service.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can choose to send inmates money through the postal service and have to send those funds to the address below and follow the steps provided below:

The money must be in a money order made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be kept for a 15-day hold, and in this time the prisoner will not have access to the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that do not have correct inmate information but only if the envelope you sent it in has an adequate return address. Cash and personal checks won’t be deposited to the prisoner’s account so don’t send checks or cash.
