Inmate Money

Every state correctional institution has a Commissary that was created to provide a bank-like account for prisoner money and for buying items not issued by the correctional facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can send money to inmate’s accounts with the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send inmates money through the mail and must send those funds to the following address and follow the rules listed below:

The money must be in the form of a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be kept for a 15-day holding period, and in this time the inmate will not get the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender any funds that don’t have valid inmate info provided the envelope it was sent it has a return address. Cash and personal checks won’t be accepted so do not send any checks or cash.
