Inmate Money

Each state prison has a Commissary that serves to provide a bank-like account for inmate money and for purchasing things not issued regularly by the facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone can add funds to these Commissary accounts by sending it by Western Union and the U.S. Postal Service.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends are able to send prisoners funds through postal mail and must send those funds to this address and do so in accordance with the rules shows below:

The deposit has to be a money order made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day hold period, and in this time the inmate will not have access to the money. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender any funds that don’t have appropriate inmate information provided the envelope you sent it in has an adequate return address. Checks and cash cannot be accepted for deposit so do not send any checks or cash.
