Bail & Bail Bondsmen – How To Get Out of Jail
Obviously, once you’re locked up, your primary thought is about how to get out. After you’ve gone through booking, your bail amount is decided either through a preset bail schedule or a magistrate. If there is no bail set this may mean that you will either be released, or you don’t get released while you wait for your court date.
If you do bail out of jail you are required to promise to go to your court date, and in the meantime you must not travel out of the county.
Usually, an inmate at Colquitt County Prison will be given time off in exchange for good behavior when they don’t break the rules and conduct themselves properly while locked up.
If you follow the rules, you might be allowed to participate in work release. You will have to stay jail every day when you’re finished with work, or you could get to live in a halfway house when you are not working.
Bail
Bail is how much money that you have to pay in order to be released from jail until your trial. The amount you have to pay depends on how serious your charges are. You will have to post 10 percent of the total set so you can be released from jail. If you don’t go to your scheduled court date, the person that bailed you out of jail will lose that bail money.
Find Out How Much Someone’s Bail Is
In order to find out how much someone’s bail is, you have to call the Colquitt County Prison or the County Courthouse. If you’ve got the pertinent information, including name, address and date of birth, they will let you know how much their bail is. Also, you can find out how much their bail is online.
How To Bail Someone Out of Jail
Having to bail someone out of jail is an unpleasant situation, but thankfully, its easy if you have the money. To start with, you need to find out if their bail is a “Cash Bond Only” situation. If it is, you won’t be able to get a bail bondsman. Cash only – they can’t accept checks. As soon as you’ve posted (paid) bond, the inmate will be discharged. If this person doesn’t violate any of the terms of their release, you will get this money back.
Bail Bondsman
If the amount of bail set is large, or you just can’t afford to pay it, you should look into the services of a bail bondsman. Bail bondsmen usually charge a fee of 10 to 15 percent of the total amount of bail set by the magistrate, and sometimes have a minimum of $100. The amount you pay to the bondsman will not be returned to you and is typically cash only. If the bail is exceptionally high, the bondsman will usually use your assets, such as home, property or cars, as collateral for the bond in addition to whatever their charges are.

Jail Policies and Procedures
Intake Procedures / Booking
The jail intake procedure includes each of the following steps:
- You will get put in a holding cell. If the jail is busy, it will take a while to get processed.
- The first thing you will have to is you will have to answer some basic questions, such as what your legal name is, street address, date of birth and a contact person.
- They’ll also ask about your medical and mental history.
- You will be issued an inmate ID.
- You will be fingerprinted.
- You will get your mugshot taken.
- Any personal property you have will be taken away from you and stored until you are released.
- They will let you make a phone call so you can call a member of your family, friend, or bondsman to arrange bail.
- If they expect that you will make bail and be released quickly, you might get to skip the jumpsuit and keep wearing your own clothes, otherwise you will have to wear a jail jumpsuit.
Have you ever been arrested and gone through processing at jail? If so, please tell your story. How long did you have to wait? What was your treatment like? Do you have any secrets that could help others get through jail processing?

Discharge Procedures
When you finally post bail, you will be allowed to go home after you get discharged. Getting discharged will take from 30 minutes to hours or even all day long. In other words the faster you post bail, the sooner you will be freed. How quickly you get discharged will depend on whether you have a bond amount or if the magistrate has to figure out the amount of bail to be set. For a minor charge, you will get booked and get released without having to post bail. When you have completed your jail sentence and are given a discharge date, you should plan to get discharged in the morning.
How To Turn Yourself In
In the event there is a, or if you must report to start a sentence, it is highly recommended that you follow the rules and turn yourself in willingly. If you have a warrant, go to the jail, in the reception area, and tell the intake officer that you think there may be an outstanding arrest warrant out for you. A record check will be run, and if they verify that you have one, you will be taken into custody. If you are reporting to serve out your sentence, go down to the jail at the time and date that the sentence order or court paperwork states. Be sure that you are not late. Be sure to only bring approved items when you go, for example a driver’s license or state issued ID, any prescription medication you might take, as well as the sentencing order.
Visitation Procedures
In order to have visitors, inmates need to provide the name and date of birth of each visitor to the jail in advance of any visit. Your visitor’s names will be put into the visitors log as an Authorized visit. Every visitor must provide identification. Visitors showing up late or that is not on the visitation list will be turned away.
The Colquitt County Prison visitation procedures change often, so make sure that you double-check the official site before you go to the jail to visit.
Visiting Hours
Phone Calls & Phone Usage Policy
Phone calls that inmates are allowed to make from jail are with a pre-paid phone card or account, or are collect calls . Phone calls made in jail are generally more expensive than phone calls made outside of jail. There are certain restrictions about when and how often you can use the phone, but inmates should keep in mind that a long line can form at the phones, because everyone wants to use the phone, too. If you break the jail rules, phone privileges might get reduced or eliminated altogether.

You might be thinking ‘why do I need a lawyer?’ You can represent yourself if you really want to, but, a criminal defense attorney can advise you of your rights, help protect your interests and help you through the court system in your county. The quicker you hire an attorney to represent you and work on your situation, the better off you’ll be.
For more information about this subject, go to: How to Find a Lawyer in Colquitt County

Information, details, and character witnesses will be gathered from the person on trial, the defendant’s family, and, if applicable, the victim of the crime. Don’t forget you can ask to have a copy of the report before sentencing, and make sure that you correct any mistakes that it contains.
Sentencing
After you are convicted of a crime, you will be given a sentence for your crime. The presiding judge in your case will weigh several options when determining your sentence, ranging from community service, house arrest, and probation, to even incarceration in jail or prison. Depending on the particulars of your trial, the severity of your crime, and any sentencing guidelines that they judge will use, you may be taken into custody immediately, or you could be given a date to go to jail to serve your term.

Life In Jail / What Its Like
Daily Life
Everyone knows that getting locked up in the Colquitt County jail is something you wish you could avoid, eventually you will get accustomed to the daily routine. Inmates get a wake-up alarm each morning at 6:00AM, and next you’ll have roll call. Then you will eat breakfast. Following breakfast you will be required to work in the work program that you’ve been assigned to. This could be working in the kitchen, laundry, or some sort of manufacturing job. While this may seem tedious, it may help you when you leave jail, as you are gaining experience in a certain field of work. Other inmates go to school, while some take part in mandated treatment programs. After lunch, there will be another roll call, then back to work. Your evening will be spent either in your cell or a common room. During this time dinner is served and you will be expected to take a shower. After another roll call, it’s lights out. Even though you will be confined to your cell, there may be enough light to read or write letters. Then again, most inmates welcome lights out, and try to get as much sleep as they can.
Most people are frightened at the idea of jail because they don’t know what to expect. If you have spent any time in Colquitt County Prison, your experiences would be welcomed, if it can help another person to deal with it.
Dress Code
When incarcerated, all inmates are expected to wear the Colquitt County Prison uniform. This is normally a jumpsuit or scrubs. Of note to anyone visiting an inmate – you must be properly dressed. Any clothing considered inappropriate will not be permitted.
How To Send Money to an Inmate
You will have your own ‘bank account’ while in jail. This money is used to purchase items from the Commissary. Family and friends can deposit money into this account for you, and any money you earn while in prison will also be deposited into your account. Outside money can be paid in to your account via a money order, cash or check. If someone sends a check or money order, make sure that they write your inmate ID on it. The maximum amount you are allowed in your account is $290 per month.
The procedure to send funds to someone in jail might change, so be sure to review the official Colquitt County Prison site before you send money to an inmate.
Commissary
The commissary is the jail store. You can purchase a number of things here, such as toiletries, snacks and writing supplies. Bear in mind that you will probably want to use the commissary daily, and any infractions will get that privilege taken away from you.
Inmate Medications
If you are on any type of prescription medication, you will be allowed to continue taking it while in jail. When you are first processed, you will be asked what medication you take. You will then be referred to the jail nurse or doctor who will be in charge of monitoring your health and prescribing your medication.
Meals
You will get three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. As expected, they are very basic, but healthy. A typical breakfast might be cereal, toast, coffee and fruit. Lunch might be spaghetti, salad, bread and milk. Dinner could be chicken casserole, rice, vegetables, dessert and milk. Contrary to popular belief, prison food has greatly improved over the years, and you might find that it’s not much different from what you would eat at home.
Pods / The Yard
The jail is designed in a ‘pod’ layout, with self-contained housing arranged around an outdoor yard. Each pod has a central control station and a common room, and the inmates take turns in using the yard. The jail is designed this way to keep certain inmates together, and others away from the general population.
Gangs
As with life in general, gangs are a part of prison life. Obviously it is best to avoid becoming a part of this environment as it will only lead to trouble. When you first enter prison, you might find yourself being ‘primed’ to join a gang, or worse, you might get their attention in a negative way. The best thing to do is keep your head down and don’t get involved.
