Bail & Bail Bondsmen – How To Get Out of Jail

Naturally, if you’re in jail, your only thought is about when and how you will get out. After you’ve gone through booking, your bail is set using the bail schedule or the magistrate will decide it. If you don’t get a bail set this can mean that you will either be released on your ‘own recognizance’ until your court date, or you have to stay in jail until your trial.

If you are released you are required to agree to go to your court date, and until that day you can’t go out of town.

Usually, inmates are given an early release in exchange for good behavior when they respect the rules and conduct themselves properly while locked up.

If you follow the rules, you might be given work release detail. You will have to go back to the jail every day after work, or you might be allowed to move into a halfway house instead of living at the jail.

Bail

Bail is money that you have to pay in order to be released from jail until your court date. The amount you will be required to pay is determined by how serious your charges are. Someone will have to pay ten percent of the total set so you can bail out of jail. If you fail to show up for your court appearance, whoever put up your bail money will not get their money back.

Find Out How Much Someone’s Bail Is

To find out someone’s bail amount you have to call the jail. If you have all the pertinent information, like name, address and date of birth, they will tell you what their bail is set at. You can also find out how much their bail is on the White County Jail site.

How To Bail Someone Out of Jail

Having to bail a friend or family member out of jail is no fun, but fortunately, its very simple to do. To start with, you have to find out if their bail is a “Cash Bond Only” situation. If this is the case, you won’t be able to use a Bail Bondsman. They only accept cash at the jail, so you have to take cash – the jail will not take a check. Once you have paid the bond, the person will be discharged. If this person doesn’t violate any of the terms of their release, the bail money you posted will be returned to you.

Bail Bondsman

If the bail amount is too high, or you just can’t afford to pay it, you should hire a bail bondsman. Bondsmen usually charge a fee of 10 to 15 percent of total bail, and usually charge a minimum of $100. The money you pay to the bail bondsman will not be returned to you and must be paid in cash. If the bail is extremely high, the bondsman will in most cases require that they use your personal assets as collateral.

Jail Policies and Procedures

Intake Procedures / Booking

The jail intake procedure takes you through these steps:

  • They’ll put you in a holding cell. When the jail is busy, you may not be processed immediately.
  • The first step is that you will answer a number of questions, like your full legal name, street address, birthdate and an emergency contact.
  • They’ll also ask about your psychological and medical history.
  • You will be given an inmate ID number.
  • You will get fingerprinted.
  • You will have your mugshot taken.
  • All of your personal property will get taken away from you and stored until you get discharged from jail.
  • You will get to make a telephone call in order to contact a member of your family, friend, or bail bondsman.
  • If you are expected to be released quickly, you might get to keep wearing street clothes, otherwise you will be issued a jail issued jumpsuit.

Have you ever been arrested and gone through the jail intake procedure? If you have, please tell us what happened. How long did you have to wait in the holding cell? How did the guards treat you? Do you have any tips that will help other people to get through the process?

Discharge Procedures

Once you are able to post bail, you will get discharged from jail. Getting discharged from jail will take from 10 minutes to quite a few hours. So, the faster bail is posted, the quicker you can get out of jail. How quickly you get discharged can depend on if you’ve been given a cash bond or if a judge has to figure out the amount of bail to be set. For lesser charges, you will get booked and then released on your recognizance without having to pay bail. When you get to the end of your sentence and have a date of your release, you should expect to be released in the morning.

How To Turn Yourself In

In the event there is a, or if you need to start a jail sentence, it is highly advisable that you follow the law and turn yourself into the authorities. If you have a warrant, report to the jail processing area, and tell an officer that think that there is an outstanding warrant for your arrest. They will do a record check, and if they find one, they will ask that you surrender yourself and you will be taken into custody. If it is for a jail sentence, go to the jail at the time and date that the sentence order lists. Be very careful that you aren’t late. Only bring allowed items with you, such as a driver’s license or ID, prescription medication, as well as a sentencing order from court.

Visitation Procedures

The inmate must list each visitor’s name and date of birth to the jail in advance. Your visitor’s names will be entered in the log as an Authorized visit. Each and every visitor must provide acceptable photo identification when visiting an inmate. Anyone showing up late or that does not have a visitation order will not be able to attend visitation.
Visitation procedures at White County Jail can change, so it would be wise to visit the official White County Jail jail site before you go to the jail to visit.

Visiting Hours

Phone Calls & Phone Usage Policy

Phone calls that inmates are allowed to make from jail are with a pre-paid phone card or account, or are collect calls . Phone calls made in jail are usually pricier than phone calls made outside of jail. There are certain restrictions about when you can make phone calls, how long you can talk, and how often you can make calls, but you should keep in mind that every inmate wants to use the phone too, so they can call their family. If you are disciplined for an infraction, your ability to use the phone may be limited or eliminated completely.

Life In Jail / What Its Like

    Daily Life

Everyone knows that being incarcerated in White County Jail is something you wish you could avoid, in time you will become accustomed to the daily routine. You should expect an alarm to wake up each morning at 6:00AM, and next they’ll do roll call. After roll call you will get breakfast. When you finish breakfast participate in the work program or other activity that you are assigned. This could be working in the kitchen, laundry, or some sort of manufacturing job. While this may seem tedious, it may help you when you leave jail, as you are gaining experience in a certain field of work. Other inmates go to school, while some take part in mandated treatment programs. After lunch, there will be another roll call, then back to work. Your evening will be spent either in your cell or a common room. During this time dinner is served and you will be expected to take a shower. After another roll call, it’s lights out. Even though you will be confined to your cell, there may be enough light to read or write letters. Then again, most inmates welcome lights out, and try to get as much sleep as they can.

Most people are frightened at the idea of jail because they don’t know what to expect. If you have spent any time in White County Jail, your experiences would be welcomed, if it can help another person to deal with it.

    Dress Code

When incarcerated, all inmates are expected to wear the White County Jail uniform. This is normally a jumpsuit or scrubs. Of note to anyone visiting an inmate – you must be properly dressed. Any clothing considered inappropriate will not be permitted.

How To Send Money to an Inmate

You will have your own ‘bank account’ while in jail. This money is used to purchase items from the Commissary. Family and friends can deposit money into this account for you, and any money you earn while in prison will also be deposited into your account. Outside money can be paid in to your account via a money order, cash or check. If someone sends a check or money order, make sure that they write your inmate ID on it. The maximum amount you are allowed in your account is $290 per month.

The rules for sending money to someone in jail is likely to change, so be sure to visit the official website before send money to someone in jail there.

    Commissary

The commissary is the jail store. You can purchase a number of things here, such as toiletries, snacks and writing supplies. Bear in mind that you will probably want to use the commissary daily, and any infractions will get that privilege taken away from you.

    Inmate Medications

If you are on any type of prescription medication, you will be allowed to continue taking it while in jail. When you are first processed, you will be asked what medication you take. You will then be referred to the jail nurse or doctor who will be in charge of monitoring your health and prescribing your medication.

    Meals

You will get three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. As expected, they are very basic, but healthy. A typical breakfast might be cereal, toast, coffee and fruit. Lunch might be spaghetti, salad, bread and milk. Dinner could be chicken casserole, rice, vegetables, dessert and milk. Contrary to popular belief, prison food has greatly improved over the years, and you might find that it’s not much different from what you would eat at home.

    Pods / The Yard

The jail is designed in a ‘pod’ layout, with self-contained housing arranged around an outdoor yard. Each pod has a central control station and a common room, and the inmates take turns in using the yard. The jail is designed this way to keep certain inmates together, and others away from the general population.

    Gangs

As with life in general, gangs are a part of prison life. Obviously it is best to avoid becoming a part of this environment as it will only lead to trouble. When you first enter prison, you might find yourself being ‘primed’ to join a gang, or worse, you might get their attention in a negative way. The best thing to do is keep your head down and don’t get involved.
