Inmate Money

Each state prison has a Commissary that was created to provide an account for inmate funds and for purchasing things not issued regularly by the prison.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources may send funds into these Commissary accounts with the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send inmates money through the postal service and must send those funds to this address and do so in accordance with the policies written below:

The funds must be in a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be kept for a 15-day hold period, and during this hold period the prisoner will not have access to the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return funds that don’t have appropriate inmate info but only if the envelope it was sent it has a valid return address. Personal checks and cash will not be accepted so do not send any checks or cash.
