Every state correctional institution has a Commissary which was started to provide a bank type account for prisoner funds and for buying things not issued to inmates by the prison.

Family, friends, or other sources can deposit money to these Commissary accounts using Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send prisoners money in the postal service and will have to send funds to the following address and do so in accordance with the rules listed below:

The deposit must be in a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is advisable to use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be placed on a 15-day holding period, in which the inmate will not have access to the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will send back money orders that do not have appropriate inmate info provided the envelope has a valid return address. Cash and personal checks can’t be accepted so do not send any checks or cash.
