You should use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day holding period, and in this time the prisoner will not get the money. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that do not have valid inmate information but only if the envelope you sent it in has a valid return address. Checks and cash will not be deposited to the prisoner’s account so do not send cash or checks.
