Bail & Bail Bondsmen – How To Get Out of Jail
Obviously, if you are arrested and put in jail, your main thought is about when and how you will get out. After you’ve gone through booking, a bail amount is set either through a preset bail schedule or a magistrate. If there is no bail set this can mean that you will either be free to go until your court date, or you have to stay in jail until your trial.
If you do bail out you must agree to be there for your court date, and until that date you are not permitted to go out of town.
Usually, an inmate in the Freestone County Jail are given early release in exchange for good behavior when they don’t break the rules and don’t cause any problems while they are in jail.
If you do exhibit good behavior and the jail believes you can be trusted, you might be allowed to participate in work release. You will have to return to jail each day when you’re finished with work, or you could be permitted to sleep in a halfway house instead of living at the jail.
Bail
Your bail is how much money that you have to pay to the court system to get out of jail pending trial. The amount you will have to pay all depends on the crime you are charged with. You or someone you know will have to pay 10% of the amount that was set so you are able to bail out of jail. If you fail to show up for your scheduled court date, that person won’t get their money back.
Find Out How Much Someone’s Bail Is
You will have to call the Freestone County Jail. If you’ve got the person’s information, like name, address and date of birth, they will tell you the bail amount. You can also check their bail amount and status on the Freestone County Jail website.
How To Bail Someone Out of Jail
Having to get someone out of jail is no fun, but thankfully, it’s really easy if you have the money. First, find out if their bail is a Cash Only Bond. If it is, you can’t use the services of a Bail Bondsman. Bail can only be paid by cash – the jail will not accept checks. Once you have paid the bond, the inmate will be released to your care. If the conditions of bail are not violated, you will get this money back.
Bail Bondsman
If the bail amount is too high, or you just can’t afford it, you should try to hire a bail bondsman. Bondsmen will usually have a fee of 10-15% of the total amount of bail set, and in most cases with a minimum of $100. The money you pay to the bail bondsman will not be returned to you and bondsmen usually only accept cash. If the bail is extremely high, the bondsman may use your assets, such as home, property or cars, as collateral.

Intake Procedures / Booking
The intake process takes you through each of these steps:
- You will be placed in a waiting area or cell. When the jail is busy, you will have to wait, sometimes for many hours, before you get processed.
- The first step is that you will answer some basic questions, like your full name, street address, birthdate and contact person.
- You will also be asked about your mental and medical history.
- You will be issued an inmate number.
- You will be fingerprinted.
- You will have a front and profile photo taken for your mugshot.
- All of your personal property will be taken from you and stored until you get discharged from jail.
- You will get to use the phone so you can contact a family member, friend, or bail bondsman.
- If you think you will get released quickly, you might be able to wear your own clothes, otherwise you will be given a jail uniform.
Have you been arrested and gone through jail intake? If so, please share your experience. How long did you have to wait? What was your treatment like? Do you have any tips that might help others get through the process?

Discharge Procedures
When you finally post bail, you will be allowed to go home after you get discharged. This process can take anywhere between 30 minutes to quite a few hours. In other words the quicker you post bail, the quicker you can get released from jail. Also, it will depend on whether or not you’ve got a cash bond or if a judge needs to decide on the amount of bail to be set. For a minor offense, you will be booked and then released on your recognizance without having to pay bail. When you have served your sentence and have a release date, you should expect to get released in the morning.
How To Turn Yourself In
issued for your arrest, or if you need to report to start a sentence, it is recommended that you do the right thing and turn yourself in willingly. For a warrant, go to the jail processing area, and tell them that you think they might have an outstanding warrant for your arrest. They will do a check to find out if there is an arrest warrant for you, and if you do, they will take you into custody. When reporting to serve a sentence, go to the jail at the time and date that the sentence order lists. Be sure that you are not late to report. Just bring approved items when you turn yourself in, such as your driver’s license or your ID, any prescription medication you might take, along with your doctor’s prescription, as well as an official sentencing order.
Visitation Procedures
The inmate need to list each visitor’s name and date of birth to the jail in advance of the visit. Your visitors will be entered into a Visiting log as an approved visitor. Each visitor will have to provide acceptable photo identification. Anyone showing up late or that does not have a visitation order will not be allowed to attend visitation.
Visitation procedures frequently change, so it would be wise to review the official jail site before you try to visit an inmate.
Visiting Hours
Phone Calls & Phone Usage Policy
All phone calls from jail are with a pre-paid phone card or account, or are collect calls . Jail phone calls are much more expensive than phone calls made at home. There is no limit to how often you can use the phone, but inmates must keep in mind that every inmate wants to use the phone too, so they can call their family. If you break the rules, phone calls may be limited or cut altogether.

Don’t mail a box, envelope with padding or insulation, plastic bag, or an envelope with any metal in it. All mail that you send to inmates will be opened and reviewed by the officers at the jail, and the mail will be sent back to the person who mailed it if the jail decides it is inappropriate.

Life In Jail / What Its Like
Daily Life
Just the thought of serving a jail sentence in Freestone County Jail is very scary, in time you will settle into the routine that is set for you. Prisoners get a wake-up alarm each morning at 6:00am, and next they’ll do roll call. After roll call you will have breakfast. When you finish eating breakfast participate in the work program that you’ve been assigned to. This could be working in the kitchen, laundry, or some sort of manufacturing job. While this may seem tedious, it may help you when you leave jail, as you are gaining experience in a certain field of work. Other inmates go to school, while some take part in mandated treatment programs. After lunch, there will be another roll call, then back to work. Your evening will be spent either in your cell or a common room. During this time dinner is served and you will be expected to take a shower. After another roll call, it’s lights out. Even though you will be confined to your cell, there may be enough light to read or write letters. Then again, most inmates welcome lights out, and try to get as much sleep as they can.
Most people are frightened at the idea of jail because they don’t know what to expect. If you have spent any time in Freestone County Jail, your experiences would be welcomed, if it can help another person to deal with it.
Dress Code
When incarcerated, all inmates are expected to wear the Freestone County Jail uniform. This is normally a jumpsuit or scrubs. Of note to anyone visiting an inmate – you must be properly dressed. Any clothing considered inappropriate will not be permitted.
How To Send Money to an Inmate
You will have your own ‘bank account’ while in jail. This money is used to purchase items from the Commissary. Family and friends can deposit money into this account for you, and any money you earn while in prison will also be deposited into your account. Outside money can be paid in to your account via a money order, cash or check. If someone sends a check or money order, make sure that they write your inmate ID on it. The maximum amount you are allowed in your account is $290 per month.
The rules for sending money to someone in jail is always changing, so check the official Freestone County Jail site when you send money to an inmate there.
Commissary
The commissary is the jail store. You can purchase a number of things here, such as toiletries, snacks and writing supplies. Bear in mind that you will probably want to use the commissary daily, and any infractions will get that privilege taken away from you.
Inmate Medications
If you are on any type of prescription medication, you will be allowed to continue taking it while in jail. When you are first processed, you will be asked what medication you take. You will then be referred to the jail nurse or doctor who will be in charge of monitoring your health and prescribing your medication.
Meals
You will get three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. As expected, they are very basic, but healthy. A typical breakfast might be cereal, toast, coffee and fruit. Lunch might be spaghetti, salad, bread and milk. Dinner could be chicken casserole, rice, vegetables, dessert and milk. Contrary to popular belief, prison food has greatly improved over the years, and you might find that it’s not much different from what you would eat at home.
Pods / The Yard
The jail is designed in a ‘pod’ layout, with self-contained housing arranged around an outdoor yard. Each pod has a central control station and a common room, and the inmates take turns in using the yard. The jail is designed this way to keep certain inmates together, and others away from the general population.
Gangs
As with life in general, gangs are a part of prison life. Obviously it is best to avoid becoming a part of this environment as it will only lead to trouble. When you first enter prison, you might find yourself being ‘primed’ to join a gang, or worse, you might get their attention in a negative way. The best thing to do is keep your head down and don’t get involved.
