Every state prison has a Commissary which serves to provide inmates a bank type account for inmate monies and for purchasing things not issued by the prison.

Friends, family, or other people can add money to prisoner’s Commissary accounts using Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send prisoners money through postal mail and must send funds to the address below and follow the directions given below:

The funds have to be in the form of a money order made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is advisable to use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold period, in which the inmate will not get the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender funds that do not have valid inmate info if the envelope you sent it in has a return address. Cash and personal checks cannot be accepted for deposit so do not send any checks or cash.
