Inmate Money

Each prison has a Commissary which serves to provide inmates a bank account for prisoner funds and for buying items not issued by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone may deposit money to these Commissary accounts by sending it by Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send prisoners money through the postal service and have to send those funds to the address below and follow the rules given below:

The funds have to be in the form of a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is advisable to use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be kept for a 15-day hold period, during which the inmate will not have access to the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that do not have valid prisoner information provided the envelope you sent it in has a return address. Cash and personal checks can’t be deposited so do not send cash or checks.
