Inmate Money

Every state prison has a Commissary which serves to provide inmates a bank-like account for prisoner funds and for purchasing things not issued to inmates by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone may send funds to prisoner’s Commissary accounts using Western Union and the U.S. Postal Service.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends are able to send prisoners money by way of postal mail and have to send money to the address below and do so in accordance with the steps provided below:

The money must be a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day holding period, and during this period the inmate will not have access to the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender funds that do not have correct inmate information provided the envelope has an adequate return address. Cash and personal checks can’t be deposited to the inmate’s account so do not send checks or cash.
