Inmate Money

Every state correctional institution has a Commissary that was created to provide a bank-like account for inmate money and for buying items not provided by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources may send funds into these accounts using Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends are able to send prisoners funds through postal mail and will have to send money to the following address and do so in accordance with the directions written below:

The deposit must be in the form of a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be kept for a 15-day holding period, in which the inmate will not have access to the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will send back money orders that don’t have valid inmate info if the envelope you sent it in has a valid return address. Personal checks and cash cannot be deposited so don’t send cash or checks.
