Inmate Money

Each state correctional institution has a Commissary that was started to provide an account for inmate money and for buying items not issued to inmates by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can add funds into these Commissary accounts using the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send inmates funds by way of the postal service and have to send money to this address and follow the steps provided below:

The deposit has to be in the form of a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold, during which the prisoner will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will send back any funds that do not have valid inmate info provided the envelope you sent it in has an adequate return address. Cash and personal checks will not be accepted so don’t send any checks or cash.
