Every state correctional institution has a Commissary that serves to provide inmates a bank type account for inmate money and for buying items not issued regularly by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone may add funds to these Commissary accounts by sending it by the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can to send prisoners money through postal mail and have to send those funds to the address below and follow the directions given below:

The deposit has to be in the form of a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day hold period, in which the inmate will not have access to the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will send back funds that don’t have valid inmate information provided the envelope you sent it in has an adequate return address.
