Bail & Bail Bondsmen – How To Get Out of Jail

Obviously, if you are in jail, your only thought is about getting out. After you’ve gone through booking, your bail amount is determined either by bail schedule or magistrate. If no bail is set this might mean that you will either be free to go until your trial, or you are kept in jail until your court date.

If you are released you are required to agree to be there for your court date, and until then you are not permitted to leave the area.

In most cases, inmates can earn an early release in exchange for good behavior when they respect the rules and act right while they’re in jail.

If you prove to be trustworthy, you may be granted work release. You will have to return to jail at the end of the day after work, or you could get to sleep in a halfway house when you are not working.

Bail

Your bail is money that you are required to pay to be released from jail pending trial. The amount you will be required to pay depends on the crime you are charged with. You or someone you know will have to put up 10% of the amount that was set in order for you to be released from jail. If you miss your court date, the person that bailed you out of jail will lose all of the bail money.

Find Out How Much Someone’s Bail Is

In order to find out how much someone’s bail is, you must call the jail or the county courthouse. If you have all the person’s information, like name, address and date of birth, they will let you know the bail amount. You can also find out how much their bail is on the jail website.

How To Bail Someone Out of Jail

Needing to bail someone out of jail is never fun, but usually, its really easy. First, you need to find out if they have a “Cash Bond Only” situation. If so, you won’t be able to get a bail bondsman. Cash only – they won’t accept checks. When you’ve paid bail, the inmate will be released into your care. If this person doesn’t violate any of the terms of their release, you’ll get your money back.

Bail Bondsman

If their bail has been set too high, of if you can’t pay it, you should hire a bail bondsman. Bail bondsmen usually have a fee of 10 to 15 percent of the total amount of bail set, and in most cases have a minimum charge of $100. This money will not be returned to you and must be paid in cash. If the bail is extremely high, the bail bondsman will request to use your assets as collateral.

  • You will get put in a holding cell. If there are a lot of arrests, you will have to wait a while to get processed.
  • First, must answer a bunch of questions, such as your full legal name, your address, birth date and contact person.
  • They’ll also ask you about your mental and medical history.
  • You will be given an inmate ID.
  • You will get fingerprinted.
  • You will have your mugshot taken.
  • Any personal property you have will be taken away from you and stored until you get released.
  • They will let you use the telephone so you can contact a family member, friend, or bail bondsman.
  • If you are expected to be released quickly, you might be allowed to skip the jumpsuit and keep wearing your own clothes, if not you will be given a jail issued jumpsuit.

Discharge Procedures

When you post bail, you will be allowed to go home after you get discharged. Getting discharged will take between 10 minutes to many hours. In other words the faster you can pay your bail, the faster you can get released from jail. It also can depend on whether or not you’ve got a bond amount or if a judge needs to decide on the amount of bail to be set. For a minor charge, you will simply be booked and released on your own recognizance. When you get to the end of your sentence and know the date of your release, you should plan to get discharged at any time that day – but usually in the morning.

How To Turn Yourself In

If the police have a, or if you need to begin your jail sentence, you should follow the rules and turn yourself into the authorities. If you have a warrant, go down to the jail intake center, and tell the intake officer that think that there is a warrant out for your arrest. They will check to see if you have a warrant, and if there is one, you will be taken into the sheriff’s custody. If you have a jail sentence to serve, report on the date and time that the sentence order requires you to. Make sure that you are not late. Just bring things that are allowed with you, like your driver’s license or even your ID, any prescription medication you might take, and a sentencing order.

Visitation Procedures

In order to have visitors, inmates must list information about each visitor to the jail before anyone can visit them. This information will be put in a log of visitors for the inmate that requested the visitor. Each visitor has to provide proof of identification. Any visitors that arrives for visitation late or that is not on the visitation list will not be allowed to attend visitation.
Visitation procedures at Skamania County Jail change often, so it would be wise to visit the official site before you try to visit an inmate.

Visiting Hours

Phone Calls & Phone Usage Policy

The only phone calls that inmates are allowed to make are with a pre-paid phone card or account, or are collect calls . Jail phone calls are a lot more expensive than phone calls made at home. There are certain restrictions about when you can make phone calls, how long you can talk, and how often you can make calls, but inmates should keep in mind that every inmate wants to use the phone too, so they can call their family. If you are disciplined for an infraction, an inmate’s ability to use the phone may be limited or eliminated completely.

Life In Jail / What Its Like

    Daily Life

Just the thought of serving a jail sentence in Skamania County Jail is very scary, eventually you will settle into the daily routine. All inmates get a wake-up alarm at about 6:00AM, and next they’ll do roll call. Then you will eat breakfast. Following breakfast you will have to work in the program that has been assigned to you. This could be working in the kitchen, laundry, or some sort of manufacturing job. While this may seem tedious, it may help you when you leave jail, as you are gaining experience in a certain field of work. Other inmates go to school, while some take part in mandated treatment programs. After lunch, there will be another roll call, then back to work. Your evening will be spent either in your cell or a common room. During this time dinner is served and you will be expected to take a shower. After another roll call, it’s lights out. Even though you will be confined to your cell, there may be enough light to read or write letters. Then again, most inmates welcome lights out, and try to get as much sleep as they can.

Most people are frightened at the idea of jail because they don’t know what to expect. If you have spent any time in Skamania County Jail, your experiences would be welcomed, if it can help another person to deal with it.

    Dress Code

When incarcerated, all inmates are expected to wear the Skamania County Jail uniform. This is normally a jumpsuit or scrubs. Of note to anyone visiting an inmate – you must be properly dressed. Any clothing considered inappropriate will not be permitted.

How To Send Money to an Inmate

You will have your own ‘bank account’ while in jail. This money is used to purchase items from the Commissary. Family and friends can deposit money into this account for you, and any money you earn while in prison will also be deposited into your account. Outside money can be paid in to your account via a money order, cash or check. If someone sends a check or money order, make sure that they write your inmate ID on it. The maximum amount you are allowed in your account is $290 per month.

The rules for sending funds to people in jail is likely to change, so we suggest that you review the official website before you send any money.

    Commissary

The commissary is the jail store. You can purchase a number of things here, such as toiletries, snacks and writing supplies. Bear in mind that you will probably want to use the commissary daily, and any infractions will get that privilege taken away from you.

    Inmate Medications

If you are on any type of prescription medication, you will be allowed to continue taking it while in jail. When you are first processed, you will be asked what medication you take. You will then be referred to the jail nurse or doctor who will be in charge of monitoring your health and prescribing your medication.

    Meals

You will get three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. As expected, they are very basic, but healthy. A typical breakfast might be cereal, toast, coffee and fruit. Lunch might be spaghetti, salad, bread and milk. Dinner could be chicken casserole, rice, vegetables, dessert and milk. Contrary to popular belief, prison food has greatly improved over the years, and you might find that it’s not much different from what you would eat at home.

    Pods / The Yard

The jail is designed in a ‘pod’ layout, with self-contained housing arranged around an outdoor yard. Each pod has a central control station and a common room, and the inmates take turns in using the yard. The jail is designed this way to keep certain inmates together, and others away from the general population.

    Gangs

As with life in general, gangs are a part of prison life. Obviously it is best to avoid becoming a part of this environment as it will only lead to trouble. When you first enter prison, you might find yourself being ‘primed’ to join a gang, or worse, you might get their attention in a negative way. The best thing to do is keep your head down and don’t get involved.
