Inmate Money

Each prison has a Commissary which serves to provide inmates an account for inmate money and for purchasing things not issued by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people may add funds to prisoner’s Commissary accounts using Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can choose to send inmates money through the postal service and must send the money to this address and do so in accordance with the policies given below:

The money must be in a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day hold period, and during this hold period the inmate will not get the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that do not have appropriate prisoner info provided the envelope you sent it in has a valid return address. Cash and personal checks can’t be deposited to the prisoner’s account so do not send any checks or cash.
