Inmate Money

Each state prison has a Commissary that was started to provide inmates a bank-like account for inmate monies and for purchasing things not issued to inmates by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone may add funds to prisoner’s Commissary accounts using Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send prisoners funds in the postal service and will have to send funds to the address below and do so in accordance with the steps written below:

The money has to be in a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day holding period, during which the prisoner will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return funds that do not have valid inmate information but only if the envelope it was sent it has a return address. Cash and personal checks can’t be deposited to the inmate’s account so do not send any checks or cash.
