Inmate Money

Every prison has a Commissary that was created to provide inmates a bank-like account for inmate money and for purchasing things not provided by the correctional facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources can send funds into these accounts by sending it by the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send inmates money through postal mail and must send it to the address below and do so in accordance with the policies provided below:

The money must be a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day holding period, and during this hold period the inmate will not have access to the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return money orders that don’t have correct prisoner information if the envelope has an adequate return address. Personal checks and cash cannot be deposited to the prisoner’s account so do not send checks or cash.
