It is best if you use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be kept for a 15-day hold period, and during this period the inmate will not get the money. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that do not have appropriate prisoner information but only if the envelope you sent it in has an adequate return address. Personal checks and cash cannot be deposited to the prisoner’s account so don’t send checks or cash.
