Inmate Money

Each state correctional institution has a Commissary that was created to provide inmates a bank account for prisoner funds and for purchasing things not issued by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people may send money to these Commissary accounts with the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can choose to send prisoners funds in postal mail and have to send funds to the following address and follow the steps listed below:

The deposit must be in a money order made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is best if you use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day hold period, during which the inmate will not have access to the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return funds that don’t have appropriate inmate info if the envelope has an adequate return address. Checks and cash can’t be accepted so do not send cash or checks.
