Inmate Money

Every state prison has a Commissary which was created to provide a bank type account for prisoner money and for buying items not issued regularly by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can deposit funds to inmate’s accounts using Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can choose to send inmates money by way of postal mail and have to send the money to this address and do so in accordance with the steps written below:

The funds must be in a money order made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold period, during which the inmate will not have access to the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will send back any funds that do not have valid inmate info provided the envelope you sent it in has a return address. Personal checks and cash cannot be deposited to the prisoner’s account so do not send checks or cash.
