Inmate Money

Every state correctional institution has a Commissary which was started to provide an account for prisoner funds and for buying items not issued to inmates by the facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people may deposit money to these accounts using the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send prisoners funds through postal mail and must send funds to the following address and do so in accordance with the steps written below:

The funds have to be a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold period, during which the inmate will not have access to the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender funds that don’t have appropriate prisoner info but only if the envelope has a return address. Cash and personal checks will not be deposited to the prisoner’s account so do not send any checks or cash.
