Each state prison has a Commissary that serves to provide inmates an account for inmate money and for buying things not provided by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can deposit money into these Commissary accounts with Western Union and the U.S. Postal Service.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send prisoners funds in the postal service and must send those funds to the address below and do so in accordance with the rules shows below:

The deposit has to be in a money order made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day holding period, during which the inmate will not have access to the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender any funds that don’t have correct inmate information if the envelope you sent it in has a valid return address.
